Three beds is R900. The top room at Hlabisa is R1 300. Half up front holds it and the rest is paid when you get there.

The story.
One family, four houses, in the towns you already know.
When you phone, you get the person who takes the booking, and usually the person standing at the gate when you pull in. No head office, no script, no queue. If something goes wrong you get a name and a number, not a case reference.
In a town this size that is the whole difference, and it is the only reason anybody comes back a second time.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi
The oldest proclaimed reserve in Africa and the reason the white rhino still exists. Memorial Gate sits on the Hlabisa road, so from that house you are at the gate for the morning drive without leaving at four.
iSimangaliso and St Lucia
The wetland park runs from the estuary at St Lucia up the coast to Kosi Bay. The turnoff is at Mtubatuba, which is where two of our houses are.
Cape Vidal
Through the park gate past St Lucia, and the beach people up here swim at. A long day from the houses and worth it.
The N2 itself
Everything moving between Durban and the border passes through Mtubatuba. If you are driving it and the light is going, this is the sensible place to stop.

You are weighing up whether a night here beats staying home. Here is both columns so you can decide properly, because the fastest way to a bad night is arriving expecting something nobody promised you.
What you get
- A private bathroom
- Every room. Hot water that stays hot, which is not a given in these towns.
- Your car behind a gate
- Parking inside the yard at every house. Cameras, and a guard at Mtubatuba.
- A bed made up properly
- Fresh linen and towels. This is the thing guests mention more than anything else.
- Air conditioning and a TV
- In most rooms, with a bar fridge. Ask which room if it matters to you.
- A person at reception
- Not a lockbox and a text message. Someone checks you in and knows your name.
- Nobody watching you arrive
- Rooms open onto the yard, not a lobby. You park, you walk in, that is it.
What you do not
- No kettle or cups in most rooms
- They walked. Enough of them that we stopped putting them out. Ask at reception and you get one, no argument.
- Breakfast is not included
- It costs extra and you have to order it the day before. Our listings said B&B for years and that one word has cost us more stars than anything else.
- The TV is OpenView, not DStv
- We advertised DStv once and people rightly called it out. It is OpenView.
- The WiFi is small-town WiFi
- It exists, it is free, and it drops when the network does. If you need it for work, bring your own data.
- No room service, no restaurant
- There is a KFC and a Spar. At Hlabisa the Spar opens at eight and that is the whole story.

I like the place was clean and quiet as I was expecting. Good communication with staff, and it is very safe. That is why I will come back again.
The property was fully booked when we arrived. The owner was super helpful and arranged for us to stay at another one of her properties. The new room was amazing.
For a rural environment the facility is pretty awesome. Very clean room and linen. Desk and chair, small fridge, microwave and TV. Parking is adequate. Staff was very friendly too.
Been there quite a few times. It almost feels like home now. The people who work there are just phenomenal.
The owner is cooperative and willing to go the extra mile. Even though the BnB is in the township, it is on a safe and easily accessible road. We would recommend it to long distance drivers as a resting stop along the N2.
Everything, from the staff, the bed, bathroom, parking. Everything was just perfect.
We picked the good ones, same as everybody does. The bad ones are still up on Google and Booking.com with our replies underneath, and we leave them there.

Three to six rooms, Monday to Thursday, invoiced in the company name on one reference. Weeknights are when we have the space, so tell us the headcount and the dates and we will hold the block.

A 50% deposit confirms the room. Card through Paystack, EFT, or cash at the house.
Held for two days
Book without paying and the room is yours for 48 hours. After that it goes back on sale.
The rest on arrival
Balance at check-in. In from 14:00, out by 10:00.
Changed your mind
A day or more ahead, keep the deposit as credit for six months or take it back less 10%.
